We love these 12W 800lm 5K bulbs! Each produces about the same amount of light as the only light fixture we had in the kitchen (used 2 x 40w bulbs) and uses less energy as a bonus. This is the "Daylight" version, so the light is bright white, which is exactly what we wanted. If you want "softer" light, you should go for the 3K or 4K version with lower light intensities. It says you can use a dimmer with them, but we didn't so can't comment on that. at a hardware store or major department store (or online) to cut out holes for lamps. Finding the best location for the distance was the biggest challenge. These lightweight "shims" are well made, they don't look like cheap flimsy plastic that breaks or tears easily like so many things are out there now. We drilled holes and then disconnected and removed the old single light and routed the wiring from there to the new ones. Lighting places - no need to climb into a stuffy, hot attic and crawl into spiked insulation. Hooked up the transformer for each lamp to the high voltage wiring with the provided simple connectors and connected the blocking power plug from the light disc and snapped it to the ceiling. Easy! Even perfectly textured ceiling worked on popcorn. One of the great features is the low profile of the rims. One of the holes we drilled for the new lights had a bar over the hole at one point. Due to the "thin" construction, the panes do not protrude over the drywall floor and do not touch the joists. Since there are only 2 clamps to hold the disc, we were able to position/rotate them to allow the beams through and prevent the clamps from snagging. We would have a huge problem with old can-style lanterns. We will no doubt be buying some for other rooms and I have already recommended them to family and friends. Oh, I almost forgot, the hole left after dismantling the old lamp was easy to cover up too. We bought a ceiling medallion (often used for ceiling fans) and an overlay. Nice and clean as is or we can take it off and paint again if we want to add a pop of color. Lockets come in a variety of sizes and designs. So if you choose one to cover a hole from a distant light source, you're sure to find a size and look to suit your needs. If you're looking to upgrade your lighting with recessed lights, do yourself a favor and buy them now; Stop wasting time looking elsewhere. Update 9/26/20: We still love these lights, but we decided to install a dimmer so the light doesn't get "too much" when we turn them on late into the night. I've looked at many LED compatible dimmers (paddle/decor style) and had trouble figuring out which one to choose. Most 1 or 2 star reviews complained of flickering or buzzing, and some complained of power loss when the switch was turned off. It didn't seem to matter what kind of lighting they were working with or which switch. Since there isn't currently a "standard" for LED manufacturing, unless you find one that someone else has tried and mentioned in a review, you seem lucky if you get one that works just fine. That is the purpose of this update; I hope to help everyone who has bought or is buying this brand and model. We seem to have gotten lucky with the first choice and now we can dim the lights or leave them on full blast and they don't seem to show any problems. Just in case anyone was looking for a dimmer for those fantastic 6" 12W Heybright TVs and wasn't as sure as I was, we got a Lutron CL DVWCL-153PH-WH dimmer. and it works!
