This is exactly what I was looking for. I had some old 8 and Hi8 home videocassettes but the camera was no longer used for recording. I wanted to get them on my Mac. With this Sony player, I could see what was on my tapes and the parts I wanted to copy to my Mac as an iMovie. I used the red, white, and yellow RCA connectors, connected my Mac to an intermediate device, and digitally copied them into iMovie.
