Review on Cooler Master Tempest GP27U: High Refresh Rate, Swivel Adjustment, Adaptive Sync, IPS Display by Duane Morgan

Get the 4k version if available

I got the 1440p version of this display because I didn't need a 4k and the $200 less price made it an easy choice, but that's assuming all else is equal. But that's not the case. The biggest difference between the two models is that the 1440p version only has HDMI 2.0 while the 4k version has 2.1. So if you want to use the HDMI port with the 1440p model, you can only get up to 144Hz at 1440p and out of my test it's only 8-bit color (although HDR works). That means you can only use the displayport if you need the advertised 165Hz, which would be fine if the displayport didn't have its own issues. I'm not sure if this applies to my device, but every time the monitor goes into "sleep mode" (i.e. you put the computer to sleep), it takes a few tries before it detects the display port signal when the monitor wakes up (at least 10 seconds black screen) and sometimes it doesn't work. won't detect it at all, meaning you'll either have to cycle the display and reconnect the display port cable. From my testing it turned out that it is not related to a faulty display port cable as I have a second monitor and can tell from this that my computer still recognizes that two displays are connected. And HDMI doesn't present that problem. Also, this monitor is a great choice as it offers really great colors and great HDR capabilities at a significantly lower price point than the competition. Personally, I always switch on HDR because otherwise the colors are too bright even after adjusting all the settings. . I found that changing the contrast from 70->50 in HDR mode with medium local dimming gave the best results, but sometimes (though quite rarely) the full screen brightness flickers (e.g. when scrolling through a PDF in Chrome).
