Wrong or missing key o-rings

1996 Chevy Tahoe, replaced A/C compressor with known leak. When replacing the battery/drier, the closest o-rings looked a little thicker, but they fit together and I figured that would provide a better seal. Crimping spent the night, the vacuum is not quite right. The 2nd vacuum showed a change. No leak could be found so I reloaded with paint. The leak was worse/faster than before the compressor was replaced. Opening the evaporator and condenser, also with a dipstick, no leak could be found, but a small amount of UV dye was barely visible in the threaded gap of one of the dryer hose fittings. I bled the system, pulled out the o-rings. I kept the old ones. There was another o-ring in the kit, slightly thinner than the original, but it was on a fitting that requires 2 o-rings. Put originals back on, crimp to perfection, vacuum to 250 microns, soak for a few hours. Loaded, problem solved. 1+1/2 lost days, disappointment and additional costs, all due to the lack of a full kit of spares. It would cost $200-300. I did nothing wrong other than trusting the replacement parts. Luckily I didn't tear up the dash or replace the vaporizer! Shit!
