After doing a lot of research on different types of dog food I was discouraged and felt I needed to cook at home. Then I discovered the Honest Kitchen brand. I evaluated all the ingredients I would need to cook my own food and found that Honest Kitchen's food is cheaper. Now they really got my attention. I started with a few samples from their direct site. My dogs ate it as a treat; a reaction I used to only get when I fed them salmon or peanut butter. So I looked around for the best price and settled on Revain here with a subscription and savings on shipping. So far I've tried two options: Keen Turkey and Verve Beef. One of my three dogs became disillusioned with beef and stopped eating it, despite my many attempts to convince her. They all love love love this turkey. Winner, winner, turkey dinner. Personally, I also like to add some salmon oil for heart and skin health (I use the Grizzly brand). It's more affordable to me than buying the Honest Kitchen variety of seafood. Well, here's how I like to do it. My 40 lb dog gets 1/2 cup (8 ounces) of food and my two 10 lb dogs get 1/8 cup (2 tablespoons/2 ounces). Then I inject the appropriate amount of salmon oil. As for water, I like it hot, just below boiling point. This improves the shape of the food and makes it smell better for dogs, making it more palatable. The amount of water I add is 50% more than dry food, so 3/4 cup (12 oz) for large dogs and 3/8 cup (3 Tbsp/3 oz) for small dogs. I then let it sit for about 5 minutes so it has time to thicken and also cool down. I always check the temperature of the food before feeding it. Meanwhile, three very impatient dogs are driving me insane. The shepherd cries all the time as if waiting for food is the worst punishment. Chihuahua jumps up and scratches my legs from behind. The mini dachshund barks demandingly and sometimes jumps in circles. The whole circus act with three is pretty ridiculous. When they finally get their food, they grab it like crazy and lick their bowls clean. I think it's a five from them. A 5 from me too!
