This drive is excellent (review includes speed tips). If the USB connection to the drive was an issue, it isn't anymore. The metal plug is very wide and closes securely. I've never seen such a wide device connector for a USB cable. I have not tested any of the water/dust/shock protection features. I got it for a 3 speed USB connection and an enlargement of my WD 250G external hard drive. The transfer rate is fast, but I found it varied greatly depending on the data. If you mainly transfer smaller files, e.g. B. a 1-hour HD video, the transmission speed is maximum. This is because the read/write process requires less overhead and simply copies the data. Also, these files tend to be more contiguous on the original drive. Fragmentation is a big problem in copy speed. My new large folders with large files transfer faster than folders with smaller files that have been accumulated and changed over the past 5 years (5 years on a Windows7 PC). There is a simple solution without defragmenting the entire hard drive of the source computer. If you have enough disk space, simply make a new copy of the more fragmented folders (don't delete the old folder yet so they get copied to the newer contiguous block of the PC hard drive, or those files will be written back to the older, more fragmented locations ). shared - just keep the original backup folder or delete it just before defragmenting the whole drive). After making a copy of my old fragmented folder, transfer speeds to an external drive were about 10x faster - literally. The transfer speed for the 10GB folder of video files was actually faster than the 2GB folder of 1000 old smaller files until I made a new copy of that folder. This applies to every copy of the external disk file. Ceteris paribus, a USB3 connection only accelerates transfer speeds if that was the speed bottleneck, but processes and read/write speeds can be slower than a USB connection (at least for USB2 and above). The size of the disk is about the same as my older Western Digital 250GB extHDD (1/4 the storage capacity) - except for the metal part without the rubber cover. I really like that the rubber cover keeps the cable securely in place. The metal plug is much bigger and wider than my old one. There was no data or applications on the hard drive. It comes with all available disk space and ready to copy files. The downloadable app is optional if you need automatic backup processing (which I would never use, so I'm glad it's an optional download).
