My husband easily assembled them but he used a hammer to make the pins fit better. The steps are wider than we have seen and tried. Smaller steps didn't work for our 55-pound mixed pit bull. She hasn't really climbed them on her own yet, but since she understands that it's less painful than jumping, I'm sure she will use them. I don't regret buying them because they look neat and the stair carpet doesn't slip like some do.
