Twisting the legs will damage the shaft.
The first step is to put the plate on and insert the legs into the holes. I turned around and when I felt resistance I stopped. I put the fourth leg in and flipped it over to find three bumps where the legs went in. It broke the table top. I'm so disappointed because I was looking forward to putting this together. I ordered it for same day delivery and it didn't arrive until the next day. While I was disappointed with this, I understand that sometimes shipping is out of our control. But when I put those legs up and saw the damage they were doing, I felt like I'd spent quite a bit of money on this piece of furniture.
