I have house rats that I keep in the Midwest Ferret Nation cage. Initially, I tried using fleece liners, but it wasn't worth it. So I wanted something that would fit the entire floor of my cage and save me the need for a liner. Bass pans are recommended by many, but they're expensive, require painting, and aren't very deep. It was cramped in my cage (the doors are a little harder to close), but that's actually a plus because I know my rats can't navigate around or under it. It's deep enough to fit plenty of bedding and should prevent most of the digging and tossing caused by clutter, but it still fits under a shelf in the middle position. It's very thick, so my chewers have to work hard if they're to achieve anything. I only have two complaints about it. First, it limits the way the cage can be installed. The curved sides raise the ramp too high for it to sit properly. (I think I'll move the shelf to the top level and see how that works.) And there's really no way to make a regular water bottle accessible from the bottom level. (Although you could probably get this working with a whole nation of creatures.) Of course, that's no big deal, that's all there is to it. It's just something to know. And second, the thing stinks when it arrives. Actually quite a lot. I left it outside overnight to air out and it still smelled the next day. I let it sit for three more days before putting it in my cage and even then it was a little iffy. About four days have passed since then and now everything is fine, although the smell is not very pleasant up close. I think it will get better with time, but it was pretty horrible at first. If you have a reason to use this in your home (especially for a pet) I would leave it outside for at least a few days. Don't even open it from the inside (I very much regretted that myself). I gave it four stars instead of five because of the smell. Edit: It went up to $40 when I originally bought it for around twenty-five. I wouldn't buy at that price as it's cheaper.
