Firstly, I have a lot of experience with luggage of all kinds, especially military loads. That's why I treat these baskets as temporary - if they serve me for two years, that's great! I've had heavy tarpaulin army duffel bags that failed - the material in these baskets is much thinner and exposure to sunlight and road salt will eventually destroy the bags. I have to be careful with sharp objects. I tend to overload my luggage - you can easily pack in excess of fifty pounds. I love that I can still use the bike rack for extra cargo - if I attach the cargo to the rack. The large pockets are perfect for small purchases or a bike ride at the weekend. Because my bike is basically a means of getting to and from work, I can store my work gear and bike tools inside. The outside pockets would be handy for plastic bags and things I needed immediate access to. The zippers and stitching seem adequate if I can avoid overloading the baskets. Reflectors are a nice addition. I plan on using hard plastic bike tool boxes and plastic bin liners to prevent loss and keep other cargo dry. It's tempting to toss everything in trash cans, but backpacks are best thought of as a bag filled with small pockets. Things get wet, holes and tears appear - no need for a roll of duct tape at the moment but I plan on keeping a roll with my bike. Spare cameras have to go somewhere! The ability to quickly remove panniers is a plus. I prefer to keep my bike indoors, but sometimes I have to tie it to a bike rack or other "immovable" object for several hours. The two main compartments lock with padlocks, but that's just enough to keep lazy people honest - the zips can break. There is no way to close the two outer compartments. Not bad for the price - compare it to a backpack.
