Multi-layer construction on a (poly/cotton?) scratch film and a supposedly (NOT!) waterproof layer on the underside with a grippy surface surface backing to a to prevent slipping. I used to buy a soft, velvety cover that wasn't waterproof and put a "waterproof" cover on top of it. Unfortunately, my cat peed on the new (unwashed) cover. When I removed the waterproof laundry cover, there was also cat urine on the old cover. I was very disappointed in the performance of the product. I bought some PUL, the laminated fabric used to make reusable diapers, to sew onto the back of my old cover. PUL costs about $10 per yard, 2.5-3 yards is enough to cover a sofa, and if you buy it with Joanne's coupon, you can save up to 50%. The back of the slipcover fits the leather sofa well and doesn't move, but the fabric facing out is scratchy and unattractive.
