Review on ๐Ÿ”’ Pro-Ject Record Puck: Enhanced Weighted Record Clamp for Optimal Performance by John Baker

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Don't believe the hype

I recently upgraded my setup and have been obsessed with getting the best possible sound from my gear and budget ever since. I bought all the gadgets that can increase the accuracy and dynamics of the sound. I first bought a Pro-jects acrylic sheet for my Pro-ject Debut Carbon. I was seriously impressed with the immediate improvement. The music has become clearer and more balanced. The sound sounded warmer, which is a plus for me. Then I bought isolators for the vibropod's legs. They absorb a lot of table vibrations and neutralize part of the engine torque; I can tell visually because my anti-skate weight moves a lot less. Essentially, they balance out the high and low frequencies and improve sound quality. I also purchased speaker stands from Sanus to increase the physical width of the speakers and to isolate the speakers from the surface they are touching. Instant stereo gain and personal satisfaction. Then I bought this puck. I was really looking forward to the reviews. People have claimed to hear an immediate improvement in both high and low frequencies. Some people have also claimed that it helped clarify the bass notes. Many have explained how it flattens the record, which helps stabilize the stylus in the center of the groove. Others have written that the extra mass helps dampen the record, which reduces vibration and therefore makes the sound cleaner. Some have even said it helps with static pops. Whether or not these statements are true, they make no audible difference in sound clarity, balance, isolation, static, depth or tone. I tried my best to hear a difference. Played over 10 records of various weights; all the while carefully removing and replacing the washer. I made sure to play my favorite songs so I could pick them up if there was a difference. But no, nothing has changed. It might have helped with bent or warped panels, but I don't have them so I couldn't test it. If your goal is to salvage a few warped LPs this shim might come in handy, but if you want to improve the sound quality of regular LPs I recommend an inexpensive acrylic sheet or better yet a new cartridge or speaker if you can invest in quality stuff . Finally, I love my Pro-ject Debut Carbon, but this is the second product I've purchased that doesn't work as advertised. I've bought upgraded RCAs with ground wires and they really degraded the sound. The sound was very flat. This and they are overpriced. So don't buy everything.
