Review on LG 24UD58 B: 24 Inch Monitor with FreeSync, HDMI, and 60Hz Refresh Rate - Best Buy by Andrew Boone

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Almost perfect for MacBook Air M1

For the price this is a GREAT monitor. I give 5 stars considering this is a BUDGET monitor. It works great with my Macbook Air M1 2020. It didn't render the colors properly when plugged in, but I know it's a "budget" monitor so I agree I need to adjust the colors the same way as on the built-in Retina display. If you want 100% plug-n-play color, invest another $400 for LG's 24-inch UltraFine display. I've researched a lot about 4K monitors for my Mac, and there seem to be some scaling issues for 27" 4K monitors: To enable retina scaling (and some other optimizations), MacOS calculates DPI based on resolution AND size of the monitor. 24" 4K monitors (183 DPI) are pretty close to Apple's Retina "standard" (220 DPI). 27" 4K monitors only have 163 DPI. For optimal colors on this monitor I did the following: - Go to "Rec ITU-R BT.709-5" in the "Color" section of MacOS Display Settings. - In the monitor settings, navigate to the "Picture" item using the joystick and set: - - Picture Mode, leave "Custom" - Game Setting, ---- Black Stabilizer set to 0, ---- Response Time set to OFF. -- Color Tuning: ---- Gamma0 , ---- Color Temperature on MEDIUM, ---- Six Colors: Yellow Tint on 55 Not 100% like a retina display, but VERY close enough in my opinion. I don't need professional color matching/calibration as I don't make a living from creative work. I also used a CABLEDECONN USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 8K 1M cable with USB-C PD to keep the MBA powered on the same port as mine. There's also a hub for the USB-A and Ethernet ports.
