You can easily thread a 3/16" bungee cord through these holes. The downside is that the 3/16" cable won't go through the hole when you squeeze it (open the latch). It only goes through the hole when not pressing the button that locks there so neatly. So technically it doesn't block. I frayed the end about 1/4" and shortened the rubber core a bit, say 1/8", then pulled the frayed end over the end of the elastic and carefully melted the strands together into one long piece maybe 1/8" "long. 1/2" Make sure all the strands are pulled together, it doesn't have to be pretty. Insert it into the hole and pull it out the other side. I used hemostats to pull it out. Once that was done I cut off all the worn parts and carefully melted down the shell. It took about 3 minutes.
