"Weird " (but brilliant) use of 8 balls!

I was looking for something useful to help my Miniature Schnauzer spend more time eating. It was not easy! I didn't really know that letting him gobble his dinner in under 1 minute was "bad" for a dog's health, but apparently it can cause gas, bloating, etc. Although she's never had these problems (I know that from !), I know that she certainly doesn't need to have her breakfast and dinner ready in 45 seconds. After trying many things, Slow Food Ball came up in my search except it didn't get good reviews. It occurred to me that billiard balls might work. They are heavy enough, they roll, so she has to work to eat, but breakfast and dinner can still be eaten. The trick was to figure out how many balls would help reduce the feeding space, especially as she has a mouth like a hippopotamus and can bite off really big chunks so she can eat her bowl in under 1 minute! Three of these worked great in their little ceramic bowl. This dog is a master of energy conservation and it was quite interesting to see how he worked around the food bowl with these three 8 balls. While the first few days she ate for about 20 minutes and had to take out a scoop so she could eat the last 5 bites, on the third day she ate faster and was able to get each bite out of the bowl in 15 minutes (which is a LOT of time in both of ours worlds!). Dogs are awesome animals. I'm sure she'll master the art of pumping food between 8 balls in a few days and I'll have to think of a new way to slow her down. However, as long as she spends as much time as my Havanese "enjoying" her breakfast and dinner (8 minutes), that's enough for me!
