Best bang for your buck!

This is not your father's baofeng. I bought two of these radios, I wanted to start experimenting with DMR. Included in the box is a wrist strap, battery, belt clip and the radio itself, as well as a programming cable along with a manual. They also ignore relying on the manual to guide you as the translation is rough at best. It's not light, so if you're coming from something like a baofeng, you might be surprised at how heavy this radio is. And it's very big. It actually feels similar to the build quality of Motorola commercial radios. It's waterproof, but you still don't want or throw it in a river or a bathtub. I also appreciate that programming cables were included as other radio manufacturers are notoriously stingy when it comes to including them and if you buy them they cost almost as much as the radio itself. The general fit and finish of the radio is Great. The included antenna does the job, but there is a small issue that limits your options for aftermarket antennas (see below). The radio's sound quality is pretty good, but I find that it's not that loud when you're actually working at DMR frequencies. The radio allows you to toggle between DMR and analogue (FM) frequencies. FM sounds really nice and clear with this radio. I ended up remapping the buttons on the side for easier menu navigation. It's either too sensitive or not responsive enough. As it had to be waterproofed it couldn't have a regular 2 pin socket that most other manufacturers use. This makes searching difficult and presents a limited choice of headsets/speaker mics. Programming this radio can be challenging as most documentation is poorly translated. The software itself is pretty easy to navigate, but certain terms for things just don't make sense. Uploading to radio is also quite slow. It's okay if you're thinking of uploading everything at once, but if you forgot to add something like a channel, it means you'll have to wait for it to upload again. The last real complaint is the antenna. While the antenna itself isn't bad, if you ever want to replace it with a larger one, or manage to damage the one that came with the radio, you'll need to find one with the connector reversed. This is the only HT I've ever used that used a reverse connector. I can overlook most of my complaints as this is the best dual band DMR you can get for the money. And it's not a compromise, this thing is a beast. I'd like a third one for my truck, but unfortunately I'm not incredibly rich. Anyway, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to go beyond Baofeng but not as far as spending $400 on a radio.
