I have a lot of these hats. I use them on my bike. This is the lightest I have. I've used them when the temp was in the 50's or high 40's. I used it today when I was in my mid 40's and it wasn't enough. That of course depends largely on you, how hard you train and how cold tolerant you are. Don't get me wrong, I love this hat, it's light, cheap and comfortable. But I have others and I like some of them better. I've had most for 10-20 years, don't know if they're still in production; or the same. Anyway with medium thickness caps I have to remove the pads from the helmet, the one I have is suitable for the 40's. I have a bulky beanie that I used with a helmet that I bought for cold weather riding. It's just too big to fit under a typical tight helmet. I needed a larger size. The most important thing is the ears. This one isn't very good at blocking really cold air. My medium thick hat has a problem with it too. Of course, you have to keep in mind that as a cyclist, I always blow into the wind more often than most.
