I have bought similar protectors from another manufacturer and they are sticky on the outside - I think that serves as an extra deterrent? In fact, one of our cats loves to lick glue on it. These furniture protectors are not like that, they are smooth and there is no glue on them for confused kittens to lick them off. They come with these pins that screw in to prevent the guard from coming loose, but I didn't find it necessary to use pins. The pads are only held on with glue. They work great, are easy to install and keep our cats from scratching our new couches.
