In the box, the pillow is folded in half. There is no plastic or anything else to protect it from dust and dirt when in transit, it just folds up and packs away. I got this pillow because I often have to sit for a long time and no matter how comfortable the chair is, you always get hot spots. The cushion is quite comfortable in the sense that I don't feel any hard spots in the chair itself, but after a while I start to feel like it gets hot from your body heat. I took care of it by covering it with a thick towel. I live in central Florida, and no matter how cold the air conditioning is, you're still going to sweat in places, so sitting on a towel with something made of gel material like this pillow is probably a good idea. I don't know how a manufacturer can claim that it keeps you cool in the summer, is it a gel?! The cover is zipped off at one end for cleaning, and a loop is sewn into the cover so you can use it to carry a pillow if you wish. One side of the cover has a slight texture so when you sit down it doesn't want to slide over the chair seat, but sometimes it does. After using this cushion in my daily chair for a few days, I can say that it makes a difference in terms of hard spots on the chair, but during the day it builds up heat under your buttocks.
