Review on Grandma Lucy's Freeze-Dried Artisan Chicken Dog Food - Grain Free, 3lb Bag by Melissa Gonzalez

To be honest I have mixed feelings about this product. I think they are doing the right thing by using quality ingredients in their food. I have this new thing where I have been testing freeze dried, dehydrated and home delivered fresh dog food as a supplement to my regular high quality grain free dry dog food. As part of this test, I also eat dog food. You might think it's gross, but most of it has to be human-grade food, and I won't feed my dog anything unless I know what it tastes like. This material actually tastes completely natural and unprocessed. If you look at the ingredients, you can actually make it yourself... Mainly flax and dehydrated veggies with chicken jerky. That being said, none of the ingredients come cheap and it will likely cost you just as much to make your own! In addition, you need to add vitamins and other nutrients that they are supplemented with. Adding water gives you more mush than other dehydrated foods that rehydrate like food chunks. On the one hand it's cool that it's not processed much, on the other hand I noticed concerns that these unprocessed foods are poorly digested (see other reviews). You can see grains and pieces in my dog's poop. My other issue with this brand is that garlic is in the top 10 ingredients. It's a controversial ingredient in dog food because some dogs are sensitive to allicin (a compound from the onion family that can cause kidney problems in dogs). It doesn't bother me with this product because the concentration is probably not that high. However, with regular use, both of these factors make me feel like I could use other brands of dry dog food. It's a shame because I think they really fit the 'artisanal' brand they're trying to promote and I think USDA Dried Chicken is high quality. I'll finish the bag and probably won't buy it again.
