Judging by the sizing picture where you line up your child's height and weight, my daughter was right on the border between a small and a medium-sized child, so I bought the medium. I think I could have gone with a big baby. My daughter is average height (8 years old, 4ft 53lbs) and they were difficult to put on. But she wore them to dance camp all week and hasn't complained about them being uncomfortable or anything, so we're fine with average. The quality is good and although they let them down I can't get enough of them, they held up well without getting any runs or holes. I bought two packs and saved one for their performance and let them wear the same pair all week and they are still good. I would buy them again but will probably increase the size next time so they last more than a few months before outgrowing them.
