First you need to download the software called "SmartDiag Mini” and not just "SmartDiag” as instructed. The connection is ok, but the software is very confusing. It does not identify your VIN and you cannot copy/paste the VIN into the app. After manual entry, it recognizes the correct vehicle (2001 Jeep TJ for me) and then downloads the Chrysler update and software. However, every time you want to run a diagnosis you have to select 16 pin, vehicle year/make/model, which means that no VIN and vehicle information is stored. Third, software diagnostics cannot detect things as simple as PCM. (says "Not Equipped" which makes no sense). The same applies to DTMs and even airbags. Finally, the device will NOT work with any other software. I tried about 10 before I just gave up and returned the device.
