I've only been using this product for about a week and am very happy with its effects. One user complained that it smokes when first turned on. My also! But here's the thing: It's normal for a new Element to smoke when you first turn it on. Oil from hands touching the element will leave a small trace of oil on the outer casing of the element. When current is applied to the element and it heats up, the oil burns. The item should only smoke for 2-3 minutes. After the initial heating up of the heating element, you can easily switch to warm drinks. However, it is important to use a flat-bottomed cup. I use the flat bottomed mug pictured (bought here from Revain) and it works great with my heating pad.
