Will not stay connected in Bluetooth!

I was really excited to give this to my 8 year old son for Christmas. The setup and apps seemed straightforward and I actually set everything up before wrapping it. Robot worked well for a few minutes but then lost connectivity. I figured it was the old phone I was using so I tried a new phone a few days later (pixel 2). Same problem with the new phone; we would get a blootooth connection only to have it quickly fail and not be found again. I tried trouble shooting but really it is April and this toy has only caused fustration (for my child and myself).
