The whistle was delivered painted. Each item has been carefully packed in a protective bag to prevent scratching in transit. The pipe stands are not as heavy as the "black" pipes from the hardware store, so you can assemble and hang them up yourself. Upon arrival, fully verify all details. One of the pipe sections was unthreaded on one end and 2 flanges were slightly deformed. I already knew they weren't, but the boards for the shelves aren't included. I went to a box store and bought 12" x 6' x 3/4" thick pine, cut them in half. Then I bought an extra board that was 10 inches wide and 6 feet long to make 5 shelves total. Also don't forget the 3/4 inch pipe strap for attaching the shelves. Generally allow for an additional $70-$80 for stain/paint, wood, straps, and screws. With an additional cost, it's still a lot cheaper than buying a real black whistle from a store.
