Just my take on the alum debate.

I try to stay away from unnecessarily strong chemical makeup without getting paranoid. Unfortunately, unless you have a background in chemistry, as a general consumer you will need to do some research yourself to make an informed decision. There are many ingredients and research on them in different directions, some convincing, some not. With deodorants, I know that aluminum chlorohydrate antiperspirants can be harmful to your health. The reason for this is that antiperspirant deodorants clog pores and prevent sweat from escaping. Research has linked aluminum chlorhydrate to breast cancer and Alzheimer's, but I don't think scientists have reached a definitive consensus on this. Trapping my sweat with all the toxins in my glands doesn't sound good anyway, so no matter how toxic aluminum is, I want to stay away from antiperspirants. This deodorant contains potassium alum, a form of aluminum. However, potassium alum molecules are larger than aluminum chlorohydrate, they do not clog pores and are not absorbed by the skin. It works by creating a protective layer on your skin and fighting bacteria that feed on sweat and cause odor. You're still sweating, but you're still exposed to aluminum. So my question is how bad is potassium alum? Well, when I have these questions, I turn to the EWG Cosmetics Database, which I believe to be an unbiased and reliable source. They rate ingredients and products on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 representing the lowest risk and 10 representing the highest risk. They rate potassium alum a 1 (water also rates a 1, lavender extract a 1). So I think it's a pretty safe ingredient. ([.]) If you look at this particular deodorant, it has a rating of 2 because it contains perfume, and they rate ALL the fragrances at 8. It's a safety measure. Fragrances CAN be a mixture of many chemicals and they remain secret. Just in case, the EWG rates all fragrances an 8 because they don't know what they contain. All other ingredients in this deodorant are rated 1. ([.]). Crystal's ingredient list says "a natural fragrance made from essential oils and extracts." So it's up to you to judge the principles of production and how unsafe it can be. My personal opinion is that it is ok. This is my personal opinion on the safety of this product. As for the rating of the product as such, I like it. I don't think I'm a big sweater, but I live in California where the days are mostly warm and sunny. It lasts all day for me and I love the fresh lavender scent. Doesn't take long to dry but so far I haven't had any stains on my clothes and sometimes I put them on while they're still wet. No problem. Overall a good deodorant.
