Unexpected performance

Many old family slides from the 1960's were stored for years. I noticed that many others had the same situation. Revain offers a range of products for digitizing film and slides. DIGITNOW has 2 of these products, I picked one for around $43, at that price there's not much to lose and if it's unusable it can be returned. I was positively surprised. There are two film holders, one for film negatives and one for mounted slides. I tried the negative first, it worked fine but was tedious to load. The slide holder holds 4 slides and is fairly easy to load. By plugging the machine into a USB port and downloading the software onto a CD, several hundred slides were digitized. The program is well made and easy to use. When the slide is positioned in the device (not by the scanner, but by the camera capturing the image), the preview is displayed on the computer screen. There are negative, slide and black and white options - RBG is the option for easy customization. After pressing the scan button, the slide is captured and displayed on the screen. You can then rotate, mirror, save, delete. The slides I worked with didn't match up in terms of reflection. This isn't a problem because photo viewers, like Photos in Windows 10, allow you to mirror (or flip) them later. A nice feature of the software is the ability to set up a destination folder on the computer (I use Dropbox). The software remembers the destination when the installed images are saved there. This vendor has a different version, around $39. I don't know anything about it except reviews from Revain - mostly positive. I bought a slightly more expensive model hoping it would be better - maybe not, but whatever, I'm happy with the device, it serves my purpose. The picture quality is very good, mainly depends on the original condition of the slide.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
