First, minus. I don't like hair. Melissa and Doug could do a better job than just drawing lines on the scalp. The child has hair or not, there are no wrinkles on the head. JC dolls do it better. Next, and the reason I bought Melissa and Doug is because the eyes open and close. I guess that's just me, but I find stare-eyed dolls a bit creepier. These dolls have a really soft body. Luckily it's not white. Caucasian dolls have a tanned body. There is no visible "zipper" at the neck. For me that's a plus. Good size dolls. Some 20 inch dolls look big enough for a small child to carry around. like a baby, but I think Melissa and Doug get along better with their heads, arms, and legs attached. and thanks to this, you can use shorter clothes - for example, not sleeveless, but with short sleeves. You can use knee-length clothes, so not all clothes have to "sleep”. However, pay attention to the neckline. As with all soft bodied dolls I know, you will need a higher neckline. The color of the lips is a bit bright for my taste, but I don't know any child who would pay attention to that. YOU CAN use preemie clothes IF you are careful. Most of the big brand preemie garments are too long (Gerber might be an exception as it indicates that they are meant for a child under 17 inches long - I didn't find any to test this). I just can't figure out why preemie's baby has to be 21 inches tall. However, I have just returned the preemie set as it was made to fit a child up to 21 inches in length. IF you are using real baby clothes (which are often a lot cheaper than doll clothes and usually perform better) I suggest looking at newborn or preborn babies, pants and tops. I was able to find a few different things that will work. I bought clothes for Melissa and Doug dolls when I found them on sale and still found the price per piece high. But they fit better in a shoe box if you use them as shoe box gifts like I did. This is because the legs can be tilted up. I use Sterilite 7L Stadium Boxes and was able to get a doll, doll's change of clothes, doll socks, baby socks, Ld-Qi stickers, bar of soap, washcloth and baby bandages - and a knitted blanket (actual baby size) in one box . Of course, if you use a less fluffy blanket or a doll blanket, you can get more items. I can try again to get the crayons and coloring book in the box. In general, the dolls are fine.
