Review on πŸ”¨ Power Up Projects with the CRAFTSMAN CMED741 7A Hammer Drill by Brian Whitmore

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It lasted 5 holes and the trigger wouldn't let it shut off.

The Craftsman was a good product, but that was ten years (or more) ago, I still have a quarter of my shop filled with tools from the 'good old days'. I bought this item because, while I don't use a puncher often, I had a project that required some cement holes (DIY termite treatment). I didn't have to drill many holes, but I bought a new (good) set of masonry drill bits and waited for my drill bit to arrive (I burned my old drill bit years ago). Anyway, 5 holes and I raised the bit to cool (water in the hole) and it didn't shut off when the trigger was released. I thought I accidentally pulled the trigger lock and it jammed, but that wasn't the case, the trigger itself was defective. After playing with it a bit, you can slightly pull the trigger (best) and it will shut off as long as you hold it there. I thought that the drills are only a few hours old, it would be better to return them. Even now he doesn't seem to want to change direction. Revain offers free returns and I will revisit this review if the replacement is better. I wanted to switch brands but figured it would be fair to see if the next drill would also be defective. What I liked about this drill is that air flows through it, it really pumps it out (so it should stay cooler and heat kills drills). like my previous other brand). What worries me is that I didn't even drill 5 holes in a row before it broke, it started raining so I quit after 3 holes and came back an hour late (I'm old and fat so I have didn't actually do it (note the delay). For $60 I think they had to sort of cut corners and the trigger assembly issue I was having. EDIT: I have a spare drill bit (same brand, all the same) and it lasted about 4 times longer than the previous drill bit. . So far, so good. Seems powerful enough for its size, I tried not to leave it on for too long (to keep it from overheating) as it does get warm during use. Done as expected. So I changed my rating to one star.

Pros
  • Compatible with Versa Track wall organizer. Hooks and accessories sold separately.
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
