Ports are sealed, suitable for USB hubs

Do I have to take my iPad out of my Very Slim case first so that the device can be connected from the side... Product works, but all ports are very sealed . Difficult to insert charger, SD card, USB cable. It did the job of transferring pictures to my iPad, but I have to be persistent. I really thought I could attach it to my iPad and leave it there, but I can't as it doesn't fit on the case...
