Adjusting to eliminate bell shape

Had I written this review immediately upon receipt of this coat/jacket I would probably only have given it two stars but after experimenting with the adjuster at the bottom hem. I think this is a four and a half star product. The reason I was disappointed when I first got it (and almost returned it) was that the hem of the jacket is VERY wide and made me look like a giant bell - not pretty! Noticing that there was an adjustment at the back waist improved things, but it actually looked pretty good on me as it was the bottom hem adjustment with an "adjustment cord". I had to adjust that 4-5 inches (i.e. reduce the circumference) to get rid of the bell effect, but when I did the effect was amazing. My daughter (who is very critical of the right fit) originally told me to return it no questions asked, but after seeing the fit she changed her mind to "This is one of the cutest coats you have ." That speaks volumes. This coat comes right out of the box if you have an extreme pear shape, but for the rest of us major adjustments will need to be made - luckily they've built the adjustment feature into the jacket. Aside from the fit, the rest of the coat/jacket is absolutely perfect for my use. It's very light, it compresses to pack and comes out perfect, it's a lot warmer than you might think due to its very light weight, excellent wind protection, and it's also waterproof (or maybe waterproof, but whatever you choose to do with it to name). It works for me in both snow and rain. Columbia could have a REALLY perfect product if they redesigned the bottom half of the jacket, but even with the odd cut, this is my favorite winter coat.
