This is definitely a jack of all trades, a master of nothing type of speaker. I've seen reviews calling it the Swiss Army Knife speaker, which in many ways it is. Not the best sounding speaker, but far from the worst. The fact that it can do so much sets it apart from any other Bluetooth speaker. First the sound. The bass is absent and the highs are quite harsh. The bass is solid with almost no hum. The bass port helps a little if you lean the speaker against a wall to make it bounce. You can tweak it to boost the bass a bit, but at the cost of some clarity in the treble. I think it's best to disable all SBX features except EQ. I appreciate the multi-band EQ control this thing has (about double the 5-band on the UE Boom). EQ is absolutely essential to good sound, and I've found that boosting the 150Hz range a few dB and lowering the 8k range a few dB makes the speaker sound fuller and smoothes out the brightness. The volume itself is quite sufficient for a 12x12 room, but is no longer recommended. If you go above 85% volume, you're likely to experience some distortion, so I always keep it at least a bar/bar below maximum. I would say that this is an indoor unit only. I think it would sound comparatively tiny from the outside. It's fine for personal use or for a small gathering, but probably not for a party. Second, the microphone. It works, but the vocals don't sound very clear, and there's a delay in the vocals (around 100ms), which is very annoying when you're using it for karaoke. In addition, the microphone urgently needs a pop filter. It's very sensitive to picking up pop music when you use it as a microphone, which also annoys me. It's probably much better suited to a megaphone than a vocal mic. There is also no equalizer for the microphone. The only thing you can get are some useless effects to change your voice. Third, ease of use. NFC works as it should. Connected Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 with no setup required. It says you can pair and connect two devices at the same time. I did that but it looks like you can only stream audio one at a time. I'm not sure how to switch between the two devices even though both are connected via bluetooth. I can play music on one device and then when I stop and play music on another device it doesn't always work and seems to confuse the speaker. These are the only things I've tested so far after about an hour of use. I can't speak to all the other things it can do as I'm not sure I'll be using those other features. I was tempted to give this product 4 stars because of the many things it can do, but I decided to give it 3 stars based solely on what I will be using it for, mainly music. I'll be picking up the UE Boom soon to compare and I'll probably end up returning the one that sounds worse. *UPDATE* I've found that the audio cuts out a bit at times, which is annoying. It's probably a problem with the Bluetooth connection, but it happens even just a few meters away. I've never had another Bluetooth device lose signal in such a short distance. Also, the Sound Blaster Central app on my Android phone (Nexus 5) originally worked to control the speaker but now refuses to connect after a few uses. even after multiple retries and disconnect/reconnect. I found that the only solution was to uninstall and reinstall the Sound Blaster services.
