Home Office Must Have

Good, solid but inconspicuous color inkjet printer. In his defence, we knew we made compromises when we chose him. We needed a great photo printer, but what we really needed was a printer that could print photos well and also do homework like faxing, copying multiple documents, and printing multiple documents, which we do 90% of the time. The need for an integrated fax was the key that eliminated some of the other options, which would probably be better if pictures were the number 1 priority. It's very fast with black and white images and prints good quality pictures quickly. Not sure what some of the other reviewers who complained about the speed were expecting. It wakes up when needed, but when it "sleeps", it takes about 20 seconds to warm up. I really don't think it's a long wait. I also connected it directly to the network. I have NOT tried WiFi. However, setting up Wi-Fi seems pretty easy, even for the average user. So as long as you have a good signal from your router I don't see where the problem could be. All of our PCs, phones and tablets can easily find it on the web and print from it. Pros: good text quality and color representation; very clear black and white print; quickly; Easy scanning, faxing and duplex printing; good, but not spectacular photo print; large paper capacity and size options. Cons: The paper trays protrude and pose a potential collision hazard when you walk past them. The exit "catcher" has to be pulled out manually and reaches even further than the trays. If you forget to do this, your printouts will fall on the floor. There are too many settings to remember either on the touchscreen or in the Settings app. We've had a few instances where we've received the error message "Paper size in tray does not match print settings" or spreadsheets have gone to the wrong tray and ended up on photo paper. I haven't figured out borderless photo printing yet either. According to the manual it should be an option in the settings but I have yet to figure out why it's not there. At the moment I attribute most setup issues to a learning curve since we haven't had a printer for so long. (Objection: Why take the time to learn it? It's just a printer.) So far these are minor annoyances, not critical flaws. All in all this is a great replacement for the MP780 which we had to scrap after years of excellent service. If it lasts half as long, we'll be very happy.
