I thought the suction power would be better but it does the job with dignity. I use it every other day to clean my mattress and pillows, or at least once a week since I bought it. I use it on my sofas, chairs and wherever it allows me to use it as UV light only works on light colored or colored fabrics. I've encountered some dark fabrics where the UV light goes out but the machine keeps running with heat. I'm very happy with it but have had some difficulties using it on the sides of cushions or even on top of mattresses as the front part carries most of the weight. . In addition, its construction does not allow its use in columns. I have yet to try it at a shelter so can't say if it helps with allergies or not...I'll update this review once I do. . However, it helped with the dust in the mine.
