A few notes on quality, fit and use

There are people who gave this product a bad rating because they bought the wrong item. This is not a motorcycle outdoor storage case. It is too light and the fabric is not suitable for it. But if you need a travel case then it's hard to beat. I am often on the road with my motorbike for several days. I don't camp (although that would be nice too). Some nights when I check into my motel, I leave my bike unlocked. But when it's foggy on our California coast or during the spring and fall months when the dew point indicates fog, I like it closed. Other nights, even though the weather may be nice and dry, I cover my bike if I can't park it right in front of my room. Other motel customers park their cars next to my motorcycle, and they're often large SUVs or pickup trucks. My latest cover, like many others, has a black top and a silver bottom. The problem, whether it's black, maroon, dark blue or open, is that some customers rushing to their room see what they think is an empty space between two large cars, only to find and possibly meet my motorcycle there. I've been lucky so far, but I've seen close encounters with other bikes at the motels I've stayed at. So I was looking for something flashier and came across the Nelson Rigg Defender Deluxe in Hi-Vis Yellow. . And, wow, lots of yellow! Just perfect! I was confused when deciding what size to buy. My bike was about 98 inches long but Nelson Riggs chat man told me I need an XXL for my bike. I googled for quite a while and found another person with the same bike who confirmed the XXL was the right size. But on the chart, XXL shows 125 inches long. I ride an 18" BMW R1200 RT with cases, top case, ilium motor and case protector and when the case arrived the XXL fitted perfectly. The case is well made. I went through the stitching and it looks ok. Bushings for mounting hooks are strong and reinforced. The ripstop-like material is free from bleeding or other imperfections, and the rubber strap at the bottom of the case feels solid and offers good protection from wind blowing the case away.Looks good. The Lid isn't waterproof but protects against light rain.Fabric isn't heat resistant either. Not from your exhaust pipes or leaving it in the sun for days.I always let the engine cool down and usually wait for the sun to go down before I cover my bike at the motel.Motorcycle tours have cargo space limitations, and you need to consider whether or not to carry a bag for a large bike. The Nelson Rigg suitcase comes with a good Ko compression sack supplied. This is very effective in reducing the size of the packaging cover. My repack size (not the one specified by the manufacturer) is 9.5 inches high and 6.5 inches in diameter. There's one very small thing I don't like. The mounting hooks that run under the bike and between the eyelets are metal covered with rubber tips. In my experience, these tips fall off and the metal hooks scratch the paintwork. The problem was simply solved. Now they are gone, they have been replaced with plastic hooks from the old cargo net. I love this case. I'm sure I'll be using it on tour for years to come. And I sleep better knowing my hotel mates will see my bike when they park their car.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Good but not great
