WILL NOT STAY on

Can anyone help? I bought this ring lamp about 5 months ago and I just won't open it. (I'll shop and open things later, don't judge me) Anyway, I can't get the height adjuster on the stand to stick. Every time I raise it to the desired height I tighten the middle screw to secure it and in the same second I let go or fall. I'm so annoyed by this.
