I was willing to completely dump this unit in a review and then return it. After spending forty dollars I was very disappointed. It didn't work at all. But then I thought I'd be honest and try a different approach. When you connect this GoPro Pro 3.5mm Microphone Adapter to your camera along with for example a lavalier microphone and then turn on the camera to start recording, it wins. that does not work. Not at all. It's not like it picks up poppy, squeaky, bad, or inferior sound. No sound is recorded at all. However, if you turn on the camera and then connect the adapter and mic, it will capture high quality audio (assuming you have a good quality lavalier mic, for example). Garbage in = Garbage out (so invest in a good mic). But don't blame the adapter. I not only tested this device with the new GoPro HERO (2018), but also with the GoPro HERO5 Session. He worked with both cameras. However, it seems that cameras need to recognize the adapter and then connect a 3.5mm microphone or other input before recording to an external device is possible. However, I have one complaint and that is the reason for the 4/5 star rating. This item is overpriced. You know it, I know it and GoPro knows it. You could put a microphone jack in the camera or sell that adapter for five dollars. They lie to us, but they know they can because nobody else makes a reliable and working GoPro mic adapter. However, I leave mine. GoPro's internal mics are terrible and I get crystal clear audio when using a lavalier mic.
