The description says 7 ½" long but that is the PACKAGING it comes in. The actual length of the product is only 4½ inches (115mm). An unforgivably misleading copy of the action as it is a beautiful, albeit small, magnifying awl. The handle is flattened at the front and back to minimize roll. Obviously intended for more delicate work but the point is very sharp and easily pierces even full through thick skin Metal part 2 9/16" (54mm) long and extends from the needle point to 3/8" (9.9mm ) at the widest point. Strongly attracted to the magnet, so I'm guessing it's chrome steel. Due to the magnetic attraction, the steel only seems to move about 3/8" (10mm) into the plastic handle, which makes me wonder how strong the bond between the handle and the tip is. One star off for misleading promotional text.
