Review on UGREEN Enclosure Aluminum High Speed Compatible by Daniel Russell

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Bought to see if this case would work with a higher capacity hard drive.

I have an 18TB Western Digital Gold hard drive that I wanted to put in an enclosure. When asked on the Internet, this turned into an opinion with few technical details. I was hoping to find out that I could still use the case up to the rated maximum depending on the SATA USB interface chips while the HDD is much larger than supported. I know Inatech's chip select works, but I wasn't sure about the interface advertised for this case. It turns out it works. I don't think the enclosure is reading or writing the remaining 2TB, although I can see the total remaining capacity in the OS. Curious. Due to the drive inside, the entire case vibrates and there is no thump from the drive's read/write lever like I heard it humming on my desktop, and that's without the rubber dampers. Rubber shock absorbers in the body do an excellent job. I tried to remove the drive and hugged the caddy with all the tough rubber. I don't see this thing shifting internally and ever shutting down. The build quality is good. Not entirely aluminum or any other metal. Bottom and inside is all plastic, which is normal for fear of hard drive control board short circuit. I was hoping for the outside of the aluminum to be painted black, but that's not the case. My only complaint is that the plastic case underneath creaks when you touch it. It was very easy to set up and I only looked at the instructions once. There are these plastic slides that snap into the drive's screw holes and snap into the hard drive tray before inserting the drive into the case and into the SATA ports. With these sleds they support alternate mounting screw positions found on enterprise drives just like the 18TB Gold I installed. The consumer WD Blues and Reds use a different layout and it's great they included that! The USB-C port supports reverse insertion. Some devices I've owned don't support this and still can only be plugged in one way to power the device on and get it working, which defeats the purpose of USB-C and claims that not all USB-C -connections are the same. You could pay more for an option that isn't possible with the design of the device. Again, one USB-C port rotated to either side works the same as the other. The included USB-C cable is 39 inches (or 990.6mm) long and has a lot more power. When switched on, hidden white light is emitted from the back of the case. Model number: CM301. I am very happy with this case and I can see that it will have a long life.
