stick is hard. I've used other brands of cotton swabs and have been terribly disappointed with the excessive flex or the cotton that just falls off. This one is solid with a slight bend. The cotton head is compact and dense. Not as fluffy as a cotton swab, but doesn't fall apart easily either. I can use cotton to fluff it up, but it's really not necessary. I guess it comes down to preference as these Q-Tips are pretty decent quality. I have no complaints about the product or the container. I personally find this brand easier to use to penetrate small blemishes (cleansing) and to correct makeup flaws (usually mascara). I never use cotton swabs to clean my ears. But for the sake of verification, I tried carefully. I find the coiled tip to be a good grip on dry skin in the ear canal. I usually just use a washcloth, so I won't be putting tampons in my ears regularly. I don't wipe cotton swabs quickly so these 200 should last a while. I like that it's in a plastic container with a lid, rather than a cardboard box that's constantly opened to collect dust.
