Old DIN, PS/2 and serial connections can generate transient voltage spikes when hot-plugging a peripheral. Do not connect anything while the device is turned on. In the best-case scenario, the computer will not recognize the connected device until you turn off the power. Worst-case scenario, you'll hit your peripheral or fry the port. Some boards have this fuse protection, but there are older boards that don't. Take my advice and don't connect the PS/2, DIN, or serial ports while the computer is on. More often than not, you might get lucky or fry an expensive vintage IBM keyboard.
