Robust and well thought-out design

Moving to a new location and needed a new standard 'yellow button' remote and found this. Our garage opening device is the Liftmaster. Here are a few impressions and opinions: Preferences: - The device makes a very solid impression out of the box. The case, battery compartment and weather resistant sliding lid are made of very thick and cleanly molded ABS plastic. Of course, it looks a lot more expensive than we expected, as the price range is typical for basic remotes with inferior keyboards. The design is simple and clean, with recessed rubber number keys and no other confusing keys. The chiclet keyboard is quite thick, with strong tactile feedback and good spacing to avoid mistakes. The sliding cover offers very good protection for the main electronics themselves and covers all exposed seams. I personally like the clean, durable and functional design. It comes with a 9V dry cell already installed. The description says it's a 2AA alkaline battery, but it's actually a 9V battery. When tested indoors, we found it to be quite a had good range as we were able to drive the garage door opener more than 100 feet away from the garage and over multiple walls. This may be an advantage of the higher voltage than typical AAs. Easy setup: While this probably has something in common with standard yellow button remotes, ours was pretty easy to set up. It only took 30 seconds for the device to be connected and ready to use. However, the instructions can be a bit confusing (see caveats). Caveats: -- The included instructions are quite confusing. It contains a lot of opener-style statements that don't really have anything to do with this opener. Three of the four types described are DIP switch types and only type 4 has a remote control with yellow buttons. It would make sense to go to the input of 4 statements in order not to get confused. The instructions are mostly for the initial setup and there aren't many instruction manuals other than inserting the pin and opening the garage door. This is sufficient, but not very detailed. Since it only has number keys and */# (a typical 12-key keyboard), the Open button was omitted, so you had to press "0" to enter the PIN. Once recognized, the entire keyboard becomes a garage door key, allowing you to press any key to open and close in about 10-12 seconds while the keyboard is constantly on. Pressing * and # when entering keys causes the LEDs to blink, which I haven't figured out what their functions are. I assume there must be some way to wipe/reset if you entered the wrong PIN and one of those keys could be the wipe key. The instructions didn't describe any of this, except for entering "0" after entering the PIN. -- The sliding lid is a little tight, which may improve over time. The problem is that if you pull the forward-facing bottom lip, you can completely remove the cover and let it fall to the floor. I would recommend holding the lid by the side and sliding up while pressing the side latch to prevent the lid from coming off completely. This requires and uses a 9V square battery, which may be less common in most homes. It comes with a zinc-carbon or "dry" cell battery, not alkaline, for a reason: it won't leak. I would recommend using zinc-carbon dry cell batteries for these openers, since they are exposed to temperature fluctuations and possibly even to the heat of the sun. Alkaline cells can leak fluid if left unused for a long period of time and/or exposed to heat, which can damage the circuitry. However, alkaline openers last longer if you use them very often. Overall we are happy with this opener. It looks good (to us), looks and feels sturdy, is very easy to use and set up, and has a very functional design. We would only have wished for the instructions to be written a little better, but that does not detract from the quality of the product. We recommend this if your garage opener is compatible.
