Oddly Tight - Beds and Furniture

I wish I could say I love this cat tower, but I can't. While it assembles easily enough, all surfaces and storage compartments are too narrow for my 10 and 12 pound cats. The photoshopped cats in the product photos give a very unrealistic idea of the actual size of this tower. Here's how I'll break it down: 1. Instructions: Very good. Step by step, with clear pictures and clear language. I wasn't a fan of all gear being stuffed into one bag and not sorted, but it didn't matter. The parts were clearly marked, although there was one absurdity - they marked two almost identical parts b9 and b6 and not something more logical. You should have paid close attention to the pictures to make sure you got the right one.2. Assembly: Pretty easy. I put it together in about an hour, under a cat's close supervision of course. You also don't need two people.3. Durability: average. The base is quite small for this height, so placing it somewhere to lean against would be very, very awkward. Even then, I would definitely mount it to the wall with the included strap and screw. My cats jumped off the top a few times and it always rocked when they did. So unless you want to drill a hole in the wall to secure this thing, this might not be the best option. Materials: not impressive. "Plush Faux Fur" is a very thin synthetic material that sheds a lot. If your cat eats random things on the floor, plan on having this plush faux fur as part of their diet. It also does next to nothing to soften the MDF, so as far as I can tell it's basically like sleeping on a slab of wood. Based on my cat's reaction, the basket seems nice, but it's already flexing from its 12-pound weight and won't last long. However, the top cushion is softly padded. Appearance: cheap. Everything about this apartment looks cheap - the fabric, the chinks in the sisal, the exposed MDF, the exposed screws, the way the felt of the apartment covers the shelves* - don't buy an apartment if looks are important to you . 6. Comfort: tight. This is definitely the size for kittens or very small cats. My two 8 lb cats (now deceased) COULD enjoy this tower. I've already mentioned the sagging basket, but the top bunk is also too small for any cat to sleep comfortably (and they love tight spaces). The parts of the apartment are large enough to accommodate them, but it is difficult for them to turn around or maneuver through the openings, so they cannot be played with. The platforms are too small to rest on (although they wouldn't be that hard) and cats don't seem to like climbing or dismounting - they always jump instead of crawling. The sisal ramp is purely decorative - too small to be used by all but the smallest cats. *Note that the two enclosed sections are made by wrapping felt covers around the posts and securing with velcro. This can make them more interesting to play with, as it's easy to get their little paws under the "walls" this way, but they're unlikely to hold up in real combat. In general, there are much better quality towers on the market, especially in this price range ($129.95 at the time of writing this article). As for us, I will be asking the local animal shelter if they would like a room like this for their cat room.
