I ordered a size 8-12 and my son is 5. While the hat fits my son perfectly at this size, it has enough room to probably last another season; I think an older child will be very comfortable. We used it for the first time today and it did its job well. No complaints from the little guy and he willingly took it on. Well covers the throat and the nape of the neck which is visible above the coat. I gave it 5 stars because it fits my 5 year old son's head but for older children I would reconsider especially 8-12 year olds.
