HiFi doesn't sound like a phono stage

OVERALL: I bought this as an "upgrade" to an old Realistic 42-2101A phono stage I bought at a garage sale for $10. It turns out the Little Bear T7 doesn't sound very good in comparison. CONS: I always check my audio system for changes with Miles Davis Kind of Blue. To my ears the dynamic range was compressed, there was no clarity up to high frequencies. The subtlety of the brushed snare drum was lost. Low frequencies were a dirty mess with no clarity. I found vertical bass difficult to reproduce in the HiFi world. In that regard, this preamp didn't fare very well. The ringing low mids that resonate with the wood of the double bass were invisible. I returned it. Oh, and I used GE tubes that other reviewers suggested. I have never tried stocks as it seems fans prefer this GE. When inserting the tubes, I felt the circuit board move in the case as I applied pressure. Yikes.THE PRO: Looks cool. The metal case made a robust impression.
