When I go for a walk on spring and summer evenings, I hate returning to the swarm of nocturnal insects around the porch lamp. They fall in my face, and one or two inevitably slip into the house as I enter. I do not like it. So I left the light out, which defeats the purpose of having it in the first place. I had my doubts when I read that those yellow onions don't attract them, but lo and behold, no bugs! And at a meager 5 watts, I'm tempted to leave the lights on all night, every night. This corresponds to 22 kWh per year with a use of 12 hours per day. In Massachusetts, we pay between 23 and 25 cents per kWh, depending on consumption. On average, 24 cents is about $5.25 a year. Your cost will vary, but I'll cover it. Oh, did I remember to say "No bugs"? bliss!
