I'm not a whiskey tasting expert or a snob. I firmly believe in whiskey as a drink for everyone, but at the same time I value it as a craft worth studying seriously and developing great nuances. How you enjoy it is up to you and you won't mind what you like and how you choose to drink it from me. Mix whiskey, red wine and orange juice in a Collins glass with ice and drink? Hooray! As for my own drinking, however, I am very picky about glassware. I love the material and appreciate what it can do for the senses. It all starts with the look and feel in hand. Just as I like a thin and tall fluted glass for bubbly, I like a good heavy glass when drinking spirits, but not so bulky that it gets in the way. At the touch I have yet to find a glass I like more than Glencairn for whisky. The heavy base makes it feel solid in your hand, stays low on the table and allows you to lift it to look through liquids without getting in your hand. The glass itself is elegant but not ostentatious or overly complicated. I believe that over time this unique whiskey glass will become much better known and more widely accepted than wine glasses are today. The base creates a nice quick swirl and concentrates the flavors when you want to put your nose in the glass, nostril by nostril so as not to overwhelm your sense of smell. There's a way to do this without being entirely fiddly, although it may take a little practice. I also recommend relaxing your jaw and keeping your mouth open a little while you do this. Depending on your sense of smell, you may or may not smell something in your favorite whiskey, but there's no denying that the aroma is stronger in a glass of this shape. Because the sense of smell is so important to the taste of things I would say Glencairns is worth it on that basis alone. Drinking from Glencairn isn't particularly sociable. You'll have a hard time maintaining eye contact with someone across the table while taking a sip, which is perhaps the biggest downside of such a glass. On the plus side, breaking line of sight forces you to focus more on the drink itself. The shape of the glass further enhances the taste of the drink and directs the aromas to the nose while drinking. I will not pretend to know how the shape of the glass affects the flow of the liquid itself, or what benefit, if any, it may bring. There are other attempts to make an "official" whiskey glass. I'll leave it up to you whether any of these are better suited to enhancing the whiskey drinking experience, but knowing a thing or two about glass and how it's made, I expect Glencairn will eventually win more hearts and minds. . First, it's a very simple design that offers ease of manufacture and great durability. Secondly, it is and remains cheaper because of this simplicity, so it is not as easy to color as snob glassware, leading to acceptance among "normal" people. I expect Glaincairn to be widely emulated, perhaps with slight future variations to improve it a bit. Glencairn is clearly a winner and is doing exactly what it sets out to do.
