The first problem is that most sticks of butter or margarine are about an inch longer than the body of this spreader, so you can't start with a full stick of butter. Then, when someone takes a loaded oil distributor out of the refrigerator, the oil becomes so hard that it is difficult to push through. If you let the oil soak a bit, it will just flow out. Therefore, the oil needs to be at the ideal temperature (not too hard, not too soft) to work well. When the oil is at the ideal temperature, it works like a charm!
