Review on 🎧 Top-Quality Audio-Technica ATH-A990Z Art Monitor Closed-Back Dynamic Headphones Black: Experience Superior Sound Quality by Darin Marshall

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great sound, bass boost, good soundstage

So I first looked for replacement headphones that sounded fantastic. I'm not an audiophile, but I love my music. I plug headphones directly into my computer and phone. My computer is high-end, so its built-in audio can offer a little more power than your average budget computer, but nothing really crazy. I mostly listen to power metal, watch shows and play video games so my review is geared towards that. I compared headphones with: Meze 99 noir, Audio Technica M40x, Beyerdynamic dt770 pro, Sennheiser Momentum 2TL; DR I think they are better than all the above headphones. If you don't like bass, the dt770 pro is just right for you. Read more below. Songs I judged by: I tried testing all the headphones with different genres and sounds. But I focus on Power Metal. Black Pentagram by Unlucky Morpheus - It has very high bpm, double bass drums combined with a fast mid guitar and vocals and high fiddle notes. It can be difficult for low-profile headphones to reproduce the full spectrum of sound at once. Never Enough (Cover) by Giannis Papadopoulos - very heavy and light vocals with a lot of symphonic background music. The Last of Us by Dan Bull is a piano and bass rap track. Can the lyrics sound clear? 30 Pieces of Silver by Theocracy - Very heavy and fast midrange bass. This song is VERY difficult to play from most headphones/speakers without distortion. Something about multiple layers of sound from the same area. Shinzou wo Sasageyo (metal cover) by Pellek. It's a pretty typical power metal sound but with a lot of double bass operatic tunes. Okay, now that we have the songs I tested with, we can proceed with the review. Bass: 10/10 Base is emphasized but not clipped. The double bass drums sounded clear and crisp. Bass-heavy rap beats sounded fantastic. However, I've heard they have very little bass compared to Beats. But that's okay because they're amazing. Mids: 8/10 Mids are a bit quieter but still audible. Vocals are never lost, all instruments are clean. Treble: 9/10. The higher notes of violin, guitar solos, etc. sound fantastic and very clear. My hearing cuts out at 15,000 Hz, so I can only confirm that headphones can work at such high frequencies. Soundstage (aka surround sound to me): 9/10 I had to look up what soundstage means, but as far as I know it's the headphones' ability to reproduce sounds as if they were around you. For example, you could say something was behind you or in front of you. These headphones do a great job of surrounding you with sound. In games it is clear if something is left, right, back, up, etc. Some pieces of music make you feel as if you are surrounded by sounds coming from everywhere. They are way better than any others I've heard except for the dt770 pro which is basically the same. Comfort: 6/10 Ah, a shortcoming. These aren't the most comfortable headphones. They're not terrible, but they do wear out with prolonged use. They break down a bit so wearing them the first time is the most uncomfortable, but they get better after a few sessions. To be honest I think some thicker but softer pads are enough to eliminate comfort issues. Portability: 4/10. So these are big headphones, not really meant to be carried around. But they can easily be powered by your phone and don't leak too much sound, even at high volumes. For everyday use on the road, the cable would be terribly long. I'd say good for a plane but not always on the go. Note the portability of the Momentum 2. All in all, these are excellent headphones. The sound is just great, with a slight but tasteful emphasis on bass and treble. The sound stays clear even with very overloaded tracks, such as games and movies/shows.
