You need an outdoor party ashtray and don't want to wash the ashtrays inside the next day. I bought the XL size and it was big enough to do the job for an outdoor grill. Stainless steel should not rust. The device is heavy and should withstand our windy weather conditions. A lid is a must, as it keeps cigarette butts dry until they're thrown in the bin and makes it easy to clean up the next day, even if it's raining. The bottom of the ashtray has a non-slip rubber pad, which is very convenient. I would like to suggest to the seller/manufacturer that it would be helpful if they posted the measurements of each available size. After a party with 5-6 smokers, the XL was about 1/3 full. Another suggestion is that the inner disc, which you use to stub out a cigarette, is pretty sharp around the edges - I'll be using disposable gloves while I unscrew the disc to clean the device. Overall, I'd see it as more of a visual appeal. closed ashtray on my picnic table as an alternative. A bit pricey but definitely worth it.
